THE RONDEHOEP POSITION | De Stelling van Rondehoep

As part of the Strategic Green Project De Venen, the “Zangsporen” (Song Lines) project is a search by artists and residents of the fens for places with special significance.

‘The system of ditches created by the medieval land division pattern branches out like leaf veins in a green oasis, but instead of feeding the polder, water is extracted from thousands of seasons and stored in the memory layers of the peat.’

‘With nature notes as weapons, recreational users as troops and the spirit of the times as ammunition, the Rondehoep Defence Line thumbs its nose at the economic might of the delta metropolis, but this “new nature” also forms the flip side of that same economic activity on the other side of the lines.’

As cultural heritage, we should cherish these kinds of vulnerable landscapes, but ignorance is their greatest enemy.
With the Rondehoep Defence Line, I want to spread a story, the special pattern in the landscape as a song line; “land art avant la lettre”, the polder as a metaphor.

‘If ignorance can be dispelled in this way, will the Rondehoep still need a fort?’
