MANDER CIRCLES
A work of art following in the footsteps of an agricultural experiment from 1929.
From that year onwards, textile manufacturer Jannink had two circular fields with diameters of 378 and 343 metres respectively constructed in the Noordelijke Manderheide.
The fields were cultivated in a spiral pattern so that the plough did not have to be turned around each time. In 1991, the Overijssel Landscape Foundation purchased the area with the intention of returning the circles to nature.
As MANDER CIRCLES, the gigantic plots are permanently anchored in the landscape.
A footpath with a total length of 2.5 km traces the circles in the landscape.
A ditch and embankment mark the perimeter, while a hill with juniper bushes and a pond accentuate the centres.
These interventions evoke images of ploughing, sowing and harvesting in the regular cadence of the seasons.
