WATERSHED | Water | Scheiding

On historical maps, there is a “hinge” in the pattern of ditches and plots here. This is the boundary between the water system of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and that of the Veluwe massif.

This “kink” can also be seen in the street pattern of the new residential area Veenderij, with this pond forming the turning point, as it were, and the lines in the artwork emphasising this.

Two types of lines: decking and ‘fish forests’.
The decking is made from recycled plastic. The ‘fish forests’ consist of pruned willow wood.
‘Fish forests’ are good for the ecology and biodiversity in and on the pond and have a purifying effect on the surface water. Young fish can shelter in them and water birds nest on them.

The decking is for people, the ‘fish forests’ for animals. In the artwork, they are intertwined.
The square and the pond are separated by the quay wall, but in the artwork, they “shake hands”.

During the summer months, the pond is accessible via the floating deck. In winter, the deck is laid across the pond and nature in and on the pond is at rest.

The water’s surface forms the boundary between life above water and life below water.
